Events and Info: Sept. 21 – 25 at Dundas Valley Montessori School

Every Friday we post upcoming event and information details for the week to come. There are embarrassing, funny photos at the end this week, so read everything ;).

Casa East students happily at work and observation. A wonderful moment!

Sadly, our Back to School community picnic was rained out, again, last weekend. That makes three years in a row, and a rainy Saturday is forecast again this weekend. We’ve been lucky that the weather during the weekdays has been gorgeous, which has allowed the children to fully explore and play and get to know each other on our beautiful natural playground.

You can get to know your child’s Montessori guides better at the first set of Parent-Teacher Interviews coming up on September 24 and 25. If you haven’t signed up yet, please do so by clicking right here. Remember, there is no school on Friday, Sept. 25, due to the interviews. Child care is always available at DVMS during your interview times.

Ah Geez Eh…

As you know, children love to share. The beginning of this school year has seen the DVMS children share Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease and maybe a few head lice.

  • Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease has shown up in our Toddler and Casa communities. HFMD is a contagious virus that usually begins with a fever and moves on to sore blisters in the mouth and on the hands and feet. Unfortunately, symptoms do not appear until 3-7 days after infection, so it is easy for HFMD to spread. Should your child develop symptoms, Hamilton Public Health requires that you keep them at home until they are fever free for 24 hours. HFMD is a common virus that all of our guides have dealt with before, and that is common in many school settings (we have heard that a few other area schools are also dealing with HFMD right now too, so if you have other children elsewhere you might want to check). More information can be found at:

From Hamilton Public Health (via the Hamilton Catholic Board): http://olmc.hwcdsb.ca/?fileID=49914

From the Canadian Paediatric Society: http://www.caringforkids.cps.ca/handouts/hand_foot_and_mouth_disease

  • Head Lice: Our annual back to school lice checks were very successful this year, but there are some of the little critters around. Your children will be happy to hear that lice prefer nice clean heads, so if your child does not enjoy the whole hair washing thing, they might be better off. All the children have been checked, but please keep an eye on their heads. Hamilton Public Health provides a Head Lice Fact Sheet.

Yay for Back to School!

Student Initiatives

Montessori children are encouraged to follow their interests and by nature children are charitable and seek fairness and justice, especially during the elementary years. Over the course of the year, there will be many student-organized and run bake sales, in-school sports tournaments, and other ventures. We ask for your patience and cooperation as they learn how to organize, communicate, and run these events. Coming soon:

  • Hello DVMS parents, we are planning a clothes, toys, books, shoes, stationary, etc. donation drive. It will be held between October 5-13th, in the DVMS gym. It will be open between 8:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. each day. There will be boxes set up, one for each item. All donations will be sent to Good Shepherd. This is a homeless charity in Hamilton. Good Shepherd will be donating the things to people who are less fortunate. We can take adult and children donations. We hope you can help give to the homeless. If you have any further questions contact the office for more information. Thanks for donating! Caelin, Madeleine, Claire, Cayleigh, and Beckett.
  • Elementary Basketball Tournament: Some Elementary children are organizing a recess tournament on Sept. 29 to raise funds for the Terry Fox Foundation. The kids are registering their own teams at DVMS and the cost will be $2/child to play. (This year’s Terry Fox Run in Dundas is Sunday, Sept. 20).

Bits and Pieces

  • Parking and Traffic: As you are all aware, the parking lot and neighbourhood streets are very busy at drop-off and pick-up times. There a few things we ask to help alleviate the pressure:
    1. Elementary children love the independence of being dropped off a few blocks from the school so that they can walk in, and the responsibility of safely guiding younger, Casa-aged siblings to school. As a school that has families from all areas of the Hamilton region, walking to school is a facet of childhood that a lot of our children miss out on. Dropping off further away from the school gives them that experience, and helps alleviate congestion.
    2. Our pick-up times are staggered. Casa children are dismissed to the playground for pick-up at 3:30. Elementary children are dismissed for 3:45 pick-up. If your children are in one of our Elementary programs, please aim to arrive at the school for 3:45.
    3. Most importantly, please slow down, take your time, and be careful and considerate in the parking lot and on the neighbourhood streets. We receive complaints from the neighbours every year and have already had an issue with a driveway being blocked. Thank you DVMS community.
  • The DVMS Parent Community Dinner, tentatively scheduled for Friday, October 2, has definitely been postponed to a later date. Stay tuned for details, some fun plans are in the works.
  • Hot Lunch families, the DVMS web calendar has been updated so that you can keep track of which week of the menu we’re on, so you can avoid the dinner time repeats. The menu is available on the Hot Lunch registration page that DVMS families can use to sign up any time (sick of making lunches yet?).
  • Staff Bio Updates: We are in the process of updating some existing bios and adding some new ones (if you haven’t seen our hilarious staff bio kid pics, check them out here). Just for fun, see if you can guess who these new staff members are (leave your guesses in the comments):
