Events and Info: Nov. 30 – Dec. 4 at Dundas Valley Montessori School

Update Nov27 2015 Intro

Strata adolescent students doing math. Yep, math. Check stratamontessori.ca.

News this week from our long lost friends in the woods, Strata Montessori Adolescent School.

Parents of DVMS students moving to Strata next year are invited to spend a morning or an afternoon visiting Strata. If you would like to visit, you can book any Thursday morning or afternoon by clicking right here. For an outsiders perspective on Strata, read this wonderful note from Jen Koornneef, who helps with Strata’s fundraising and a bit of administration.

Strata guide Chris Marks is also hosting a Montessori Book Club that will take place on three Wednesday evenings in December. From Chris:

This will be a three week look at Dr. Montessori’s writings from which the adolescent program has been developed. It will provide some insights as to why we do what we do!

Interested? Sign up here.

Remember, Strata Cafe is back every Friday morning from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. Check the DVMS Facebook page for a look at the delicious breakfast sandwiches available. Coffee in the woods around a fireplace, can’t beat that.

Finally, set aside Saturday, Dec. 12, from 9:00 – 1:00 for Strata’s annual Holiday Bazaar. This year, they will be combining forces with the adolescent students from Clanmore Montessori’s adolescent program. As always, the day will consist of a Super Cafe and feature items made as part of the students’ micro-economy ventures — soap, candles, scarves, crafts, apiary products, and more. More details to come.

 DVMS Parent Observations:

Parent Observations are this week. If you haven’t signed up yet, please do so below, and remember to check  the details as observation scheduling is different for each level. (You can also check the dvms.ca calendar).

Casa: Casa Parent Observations will take place on the mornings of Wednesday (Dec. 2), Thursday (Dec. 3), and Friday (Dec. 4), and on the afternoons of Wednesday (Dec. 2) and Thursday (Dec. 3).

[Note: parents of children in the half-day programme may choose to observe the afternoon work cycle instead of observing your child during the morning cycle; to accommodate all of our parents, please choose to observe your child in the morning OR the afternoon work cycle, without your child].

Casa parents, please sign up here.

Lower Elementary: Lower Elementary Parent Observations will take place from 9:20-10:40 on the mornings of Monday (Nov. 30), Tuesday (Dec. 1), Wednesday (Dec. 2), and Thursday (Dec. 3).

Lower Elementary parents, please sign up here.

Upper Elementary: Both DVMS Upper Elementary Montessori environments will be open from 10:00-11:00 on both Wednesday (Dec. 2) and Thursday (Dec. 3) for Upper Elementary parents to drop in and spend some time with their children in their Montessori environments. Upper Elementary parents do not need to sign up.

(There are no observations in the Toddler Community).

Elementary Activities:

  • Elementary activities for the fall term are over. Information about winter term activities is coming soon.
  • Lower Elementary Students will be going to see The Nutcracker on Friday, Dec. 4. They will be travelling to Mohawk College and back by bus.  They will leave DVMS at approximately 11:00 and return by about 2:00. We’ll have details on lunch plans for you early next week.
  • Pizza Day!: Some Upper Elementary students are organizing a pizza day. The pizza will be in addition to regular hot lunch service (and packed from home lunches if you still want to send one). From the Upper students:

Dear Parents,

We have organized a pizza day for Dec. 3 (Thursday). We will send home an envelope on Monday, Nov. 30th, and the order and money is due Wed., Dec. 2nd. Each slice is $2 and the money goes towards the sponsorship of Syrian refugees.

Thank you for your support,

Emily and Beckett.

  • Craft Supplies Request: Upper Elementary students are also looking for some craft supplies for their annual craft sale in support of Tuleeni Home for Orphans in Tanzania, for which DVMS has been raising money for many years. They are looking for donations of old pool noodles, large cardboard boxes, and yarn — “especially festive colours.” If you can help, please drop any supplies into the office and Seraphina and Justin will take it from there.

But wait, there’s more:

Food Factory letterOur hot lunch provider, Food for Tots, is going to be featured on the TV show Food Factory, on Food Network Canada, this Saturday, Nov. 28, at 8:00 p.m. (Click image for larger version).
