Events and Info: Feb. 29 – March 4 at Dundas Valley Montessori School

This week is Montessori Education Week. DVMS and a number of other CCMA Montessori schools will be sharing Montessori links, videos, articles, and other goodies all week on Twitter. Keep an eye out, and if you’re on Twitter, be sure to follow @dvmstweets and help spread the #WhyMontessori message.

Also this week, we gave the camera to students at each level for a day so you can get a look at a day in their lives, from their perspective. You’ll find a gallery for each level interspersed throughout this post. Enjoy what the world looks like to them!

Our Toddler Community made a valiant effort, at great risk to Kate’s phone, to have the children take some photos:

Elementary Activities:

The Elementary activities for the winter term are winding down as we head into March Break. This week:

Lower Elementary: both Lower Elementary classes will be skating at Grightmire Arena on Friday this week. This is the last week of skating.

As always,

  • When your child is skating, please ensure that their skates and helmet are in a bag that they can easily carry to and from the rink, and that skates are properly laced and easy for them to put on themselves. Please also note that the rink requires they wear a CSA approved helmet (look for the CSA sticker; they don’t deny kids with them, but they do frown and grumble a bit about children skating in bike helmets). A water bottle is great idea too. We can always use some extra hands to help get skates tied up, and parents are welcome to skate with us. Children will be at the rink by about 1:45 and will skate until 3:00.

Upper Elementary: there is no scheduled activity for the Upper Elementary classes this week. Next week, on Friday, March 11, the Upper Elementary classes will be skiing at Chicopee. This is the make-up ski day for the cancelled trip in January. As this is the last Friday before March Break, we want to invite any parents that might be available to come to Chicopee and ski with us — a bit of a family day.

  • Please remember, children need to be at DVMS by 8:15 a.m. in order to take the bus to Chicopee. If you know your child will not be skiing, please let us know by Thursday, March 3, as the ski hill requires our numbers a week in advance. Thank you.

But wait, there’s more:

  • March Break: this year the break runs from Monday, March 14, to Thursday, March 24, and coincides with the Easter long weekend. Friday, March 25, is Good Friday, and Monday, March 28, is Easter Monday. Children return to school on Tuesday, March 29.
  • For the next two weeks, DVMS will have two visitors from the Fondazione Centro Internazionale Studi Montessoriani (International Centre for Montessori Studies Foundation) in Bergamo, Italy. They will spending time in our Lower and Upper Elementary environments. Both Tony and Terrence trained in Bergamo, and Terrence acts as an “album reader” for their students (ensuring Montessori guides-in-training are putting together the proper curriculum guides they will need).

Finally this week, photos taken by our Casa students (there were lots of blurry ones):
