Events and Info: June 6 – 10 at Dundas Valley Montessori School

BenefitPoster

You’ve seen each other on the playground and in the parking lot all year, but this Saturday night you get to socialize with each other like grown ups, in a real grown up location — Dundas’s new SHED Brewery. Ticket sales have been brisk this week, and you can still purchase tickets at DVMS, online through the event page, or at the door on Saturday night.

Also, we want to extend a huge thank you to our entire community for all of your very generous donations to our silent auction. You’ve probably all had a chance to peruse the items on display at DVMS, and perhaps get in a few early bids, but if not here’s a little sneak peek at some of the items that will be available for bidding on Saturday night.

There will also be raffle draws for certain items, a 50/50 draw (tickets will be 1 for $5 or 3 for $10), and everyone’s favourites — a Bucket(s) ‘O Booze draw (tickets will be 1 for $10 or 3 for $20):

Elementary Activities:

  • A number of our Lower and Upper Elementary Montessori students headed to Mississauga this past week for a soccer tournament hosted by Northstar Montessori school. They played games against Northstar and Whitby Montessori students, got lots of sun, drank lots of water, and experienced the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. The final Upper Elementary game went to a tension-filled shootout. Enjoy a video of the drama edited by one of our Upper students:

  • Both Lower and Upper Elementary activities are finished for the 2015-2016 school year. Here are a few photos from the last day of Upper Elementary tennis today:

Both Elementary levels have their year-end trips coming up:

  • Lower Elementary students will be camping at Crieff Hills overnight, June 16-17. A letter with packing list and other details went home with your child today; please keep the following in mind:
    • Children will require a sleeping bag, so if it’s packed away or at the cottage you have some time to track it down.
    • If your child has any dietary or allergy issues, please let Noeleen or Jodi know by Monday, June 13, so we can determine alternatives/solutions.
    • All electronic devices and toys are to be left at home.
    • Overnight experiences are exciting but can be scary for some.  If you feel your child is not ready to for this excursion, keep in mind it is an annual event and they can join us next year.  We ask that students do not join us for just the day, as it can upset other students when they leave.
    • Their bus will leave DVMS at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 16. They will leave Crieff at 1:30 on Friday, June 17, in order to be back at DVMS for regular pick up.
  • Upper Elementary students will be heading to Camp Nokomis form June 15 – 17, in Fergus, ON. More details will come home soon, but for now:
    • Children will require a sleeping bag, so if it’s packed away or at the cottage you have some time to track it down.
    • Camp Nokomis provides catering for their meals and dietary issues have already been communicated to them.
    • All electronic devices are to be left at home.
    • Their bus will depart DVMS at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15. They will leave Camp Nokomis on the morning of Friday, June 17, in order to be back at DVMS for regular pick up.

  • Elementary Camp June 27-30?: Our Casa summer camp for the week of June 27-30 is going to be run by the Dundas Valley School of Art, at DVMS. If any elementary families are interested in the School of Art also hosting an elementary-aged camp that week, please let us know, at admin@dvms.ca, ASAP. Thank you.

But wait, there’s more:

  • Third Year Casa Sleepover: Children finishing their last year of the Casa program will be spending the night at DVMS on Friday, June 10, camping in the gym. Look for a letter that was sent home with your child today (or ask your child’s Casa guide on Monday if the letter went the way of the magical mystery missing things). A few pertinent details:
    • Please resist the temptation to pop in after school on Friday for last minute hugs and kisses as this can lead to unhappy children.
    • Pick up is at 9:00 a.m. sharp on Saturday morning, outside if weather is permitting.
    • Please do not bring flashlights or any electronics.

  • Elizabeth’s Ankle: As some of you know, Casa East guide Elizabeth broke her ankle recently. She is on the mend and has been receiving help with year-end reports from her dog while recuperating. Elizabeth came to visit this week and the Casa East children were very excited to see her. Her son was also with her, who Holly taught when he was a three-year-old Casa child; as you can see, he has grown a little since then:

  • Casa First and Second Year Parent-Teacher Interviews: This year, in lieu of printed progress reports, parents of children in their first or second year of the Casa program are welcome to have a year-end meeting with their child’s Casa guides. (Third year children will receive a printed progress report).
    • Casa North (Dylan/Dawn) and Casa East (Elizabeth/Stef) will hold their interviews from 3:00-6:00 on Wednesday, June 8, and Thursday, June 9.
    • Casa South (Pat/Armando) will hold their interviews from 3:00-4:00 on Monday-Thursday, June 6-10.
    • If you would like to meet with your child’s guides, and haven’t already done so, please click here to select a 20 minute interview timeslot.

  • Reminder About Footwear: With the weather now nice and hot, please remember that we ask children do not wear open-toed sandals on the playground. Between wood chips, twigs, other elements of our natural playground, and the possibility of stepped on toes, open-toed sandals are a hazard (Janice lost half a toenail this week herself from a stepped on toe — no sandals Janice!). Also, children are required to wear shoes and socks in the school for hygiene purposes. Thank you.

We know you’ll all have a great weekend, especially on Saturday night! In the meantime, enjoy some pics of Montessori at DVMS this past week:
