Events and Info: Sept. 12-16, 2016, Dundas Valley Montessori School

These Montessori elementary girls started working on these gymnastic/dance routines last year and got right back to it this past week (including some new Casa-aged siblings) and wanted to make sure we shared the video of their spectacular feats of flexibility.

Welcome back, welcome home.

What an amazing first week. Inevitably, we had a few tears, but they quickly turned into smiles as new routines were learned and old routines were remembered.

The success of our program lies in children’s profound adaptability. It is our responsibility at DVMS to ensure that the communities we create, from toddler to adolescent, are uplifting and engaging, challenging and inspiring, kind and safe.

We know we have succeeded when we see light in the children’s eyes, when they make mistakes, when they tell their parents of their projects, or that they got to carry the dishes down the hall. They can be themselves because this is a community that cares for them. So welcome home.

Sincerely,

Tony Evans, DVMS Director

PS. I just got a text from one of our original students, now in Grade 12, as I was writing this:

Thank you so much for teaching me long division. It’s become terrifyingly useful.

DVMS Back to School Picnic

Our annual Welcome Back community picnic has been rained out for three years in a row, but so far the forecast for Saturday, September 17, is looking great (weather forecasts never change, right?). Join us on the DVMS playground at 11:00 a.m. with a picnic basket, blanket, chairs, and anything else you would like to bring for picnicin’ fun in the sun. This is a casual event that gives us all a chance to put names to faces, catch up after the summer, and spend a lovely, sunny afternoon together. See you there.

Elementary Activities:

  • Elementary Parent Orientation: Wednesday, September 14, 3:00-4:00. Our Elementary Montessori guides will discuss what children need to succeed in the Elementary program as part of a general orientation to the program at each level, as well as Montessori and homework and the weekly schedule, including planned and spontaneous outings. Please go directly to your child’s elementary Montessori environment.
  • Elementary After School Clubs: DVMS is excited to be offering our families a series of after school opportunities to enrich and inspire your children. Over the year, we will be offering different clubs based on interest and opportunity. The cost will be the same as after school care ($7.00 per one-hour session), the clubs will run from 3:45-4:45 on their respective days, and you will be billed at the end of each session of clubs. If your child signs up for a club you will be charged for each week regardless of attendance out of respect for the clubs and for those who are running them. For the next 8 weeks (starting Tuesday, Sept. 13) we will be offering the following clubs:
    • Tuesdays – Lower Elementary Run, Jump, Throw Club combined with Upper Elementary cross-country training (the annual Montessori school cross-country run at LaSalle Park in Burlington will be on October 5th). These clubs will be run by DVMS Montessori Moms Lindsay Atkinson (of Power Push Training) and tri-athlete Christine Kennedy.
    • Wednesdays – Upper Elementary Soccer Club with Seline Baysan. From Selin: “I am so excited to be a part of the Soccer Club at DVMS this year! Growing up, soccer was a sport I loved doing, and have played for over 10 years. Soccer taught me how to be a team player and how to think quickly on my feet. We will have so much fun practicing our soccer skills and playing friendly games.”
    • Thursdays – Elementary Math Games Club. At “Math with Kath” (Upper Elementary West Montessori guide Kathleen MacKinnon) students will play games like chess, cards, and close the box, and will address, through different games and activities, different math concepts and challenges.

As the year goes on, we will be offering more choices for clubs, which could include such things as yoga, theatre, choir, basketball, volleyball, and ultimate frisbee.
If your child would like to join any of these clubs, please email clubs@dvms.ca. Upper Elementary French Specialist Selin Baysan is your contact person, at that email address, for club related questions.

  • Lower Elementary Outdoor Adventures: To begin the year, the Lower Elementary students will be participating in an outdoor adventure program based out of DVMS (no need to pick up or drop off anywhere different) on Friday Sept. 9, 16, and 30 (DVMS is closed on Friday, Sept. 23, for Parent-Teacher Interviews). Please ensure they wear or bring clothing appropriate for the outdoor weather each Friday — layers are good, as well as sturdy outdoor running shoes. Lower Elementary children do not need to bring a water bottle for activities as each child is given one for at school use.

  • Upper Elementary at Dundas Conservation Area: Upper Elementary students will be spending their first few Fridays in the Dundas Valley Conservation Area. Please drop your Upper Elementary child off at the Trail Centre (entrance is next to the toboganning hill on Governor’s Rd.) by 9:00 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, 16, and 30 (DVMS is closed on Friday, Sept. 23, for Parent-Teacher Interviews). Please follow the roadway around behind the hill to the parking lot just below the Trail Centre. Upper children can be picked up at the Trail Centre by 3:00; as always, if you are unable to pick up at 3:00, let us know and we will carpool those children back to DVMS for regular dismissal.

But wait, there’s more:

  • Parent-Teacher Interviews: If you haven’t signed up for your Parent-Teacher Interview yet, you can sign up right here. Interviews take place on Thursday, Sept. 22, from 4:00-7:00, and on Friday, Sept. 23, from 8:00-1:00. DVMS is closed on Friday, Sept. 23, for the interviews. There is no school. Childcare is available during your interview times.

  • Absent or Late?: If your student is going to be absent or late, please let us know via phone (905-627-1073) or email (admin@dvms.ca). Our Montessori environments send their attendance to the office just after 9:00 each morning; if we have any absences we haven’t received notification of we’ll give you quick call. Thank you.

  • Footwear: It’s been real hot, but we ask that children please do not wear open-toed sandals as their outdoor footwear, for a couple of reasons. Stable, closed-toe footwear helps prevent trip and fall accidents, and woodchip slivers; also, children are required to wear shoes and socks inside the school for hygenic purposes and sometimes open-toed sandals mean bare feet once they come inside. Thank you.

  • Private Music Lessons at DVMS: Two of our DVMS Montessori Moms are once again offering private music lessons at DVMS (these lessons are offered independently of DVMS programming, but make use of DVMS space and some instruments):
    • Piano lessons with DVMS music teacher (and Hamilton’s Independent Music Teacher of the Year) Kate Quigley are available during lunchtime recess and after school. Choose from private lessons or semi-private (with a friend). Please contact Kate at music@dvms.ca.
    • Gosia McCarroll will be at DVMS on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Gosia offers one-on-one violin and piano lessons starting at 3:30. Cost is $55/hour for children aged 4 and up. Please contact Gosia at malgomccarroll@yahoo.com.

Fun Family Events:

There are a couple of fun family events coming up we wanted to make sure you know about.

  • Telling Tales Festival: The 8th Annual Telling Tales Festival is also taking place on Sunday, September 18, at Westfield Heritage Village from 10:00-4:00. Telling Tales is a free, one-day, outdoor festival, and a year-round commitment to promoting literacy and inspiring a love of reading.

Finally, enjoy your weekly peek into your children’s Montessori world (if you ever see a picture of your child that you would like, let Jason know at admin@dvms.ca and we’ll send you the original, higher resolution image):
