Elementary Activities:

  • Lower Elementary students will be heading to Camp Nokomis from June 15 – 16, in Fergus, ON.

    • All electronic devices are to be left at home.
    • Their bus will depart DVMS at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 15. They will leave Camp Nokomis at approximately 2:30 on Friday, June 16, in order to be back at DVMS for around 4:00 pm.
    • A packing list came home with your Lower Elementary child last week. If it managed to go missing between here and there, click here for a digital version.

  • Upper Elementary students will be heading to Rocky Ridge Ranch from June 14 – 16, in Milton, ON.

But wait, there’s more:

  • 3rd Year Casa Parent Meeting: Parents of Casa children moving to Lower Elementary at DVMS next year are invited to attend a short meeting on Tuesday, June 20, from 3:30-4:00, to discuss their successful transition to Lower Elementary, including what they can work on over the summer to ensure they are prepared for September.

Summer Camp Info

  • DVMS Summer Casa Camps: DVMS Summer Casa Camp is open to children who have completed their first year of Casa (approx. age 3 1/2 to 6). Half day and full day options are available. Cost is $140/week for half days and $250/week for full days. Once you have submitted your form, please come into DVMS to sign the hard copy and drop off payment by June 21 (or post dated cheques for each camp week)You can register for DVMS Summer Casa Camp by clicking here.
  • Summer Camp Counselor Positions: Year 6 Upper Elementary students are welcome, if they wish, to submit resumes to Kathleen to apply for a camp counselor position for one of the 8 camp weeks at DVMS this summer. If they get through the first stage, there will be an interview with Kathleen. These positions are open to Strata students too, so competition may be fierce!
  • Dundas Valley School of Art Camp: A “Before Summer Art Camp” for Dundas Valley Montessori students ages 4+ — for the week between end of school and beginning of DVMS Summer Casa Camps. More info and online registration can be found here (from the “Classes” dropdown menu, select “Summer Camps” and add either the morning or afternoon, or both for full days, “Head StART! A Montessori Program” options to your cart). Click the image below for larger version of their info poster. From DVSA:

Taught by qualified, professional artists, our Summer Art Camps encourage originality and are designed to develop your child’s creative literacy and art skills – all in a fun and supportive studio environment. Let your young artist explore and create at their own pace, free to choose what they want to express at a variety of creative stations that include Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture/Building projects and much more.

  • Journal of Montessori Research: A number of DVMS families are involved in various academic fields, and I’m sure many of you will have an interest in reading scholarly articles discussing various research related to Montessori education. Click here to view the latest issue of the Journal of Montessori Research. It is U.S. based and focused, but there is still interesting work being done that is relevant to all Montessori schools and Montessori children.

  • End of Year Dates and BBQ: Another school year is suddenly almost over. The last full day of school this year is Thursday, June 22. The annual DVMS Family BBQ will be on Friday, June 23. More details to come next week, but the Dunk Tank and Bouncy Castle have been ordered!

Fun Family Events:

  • Spring Songs: Saturday, June 10, at 8:00 p.m. at the Church of St. John the Evangelist at the corner of Locke St. and Charlton Ave. DVMS Lower Elementary guide Michael Rode conducts the Hamilton Choir Project, which features members of the DVMS parent community. • A Day On The Bridge: Sunday, June 11, 12:00-11:00 p.m., at McQuesten High Level Bridge. Click here for the event website. This event was organized by DVMS alumnus family:

Celebrate our magnificent natural surroundings while commemorating Canada’s 150th birthday. Enjoy food, fun, activities, arts and music on the bridge throughout the day, and then a gala fundraising dinner and grand finale celebration to cap off the night. Raise funds to purchase and protect land that will become a part of the Cootes To Escarpment EcoPark System, one of the most biologically-rich areas of Canada.
“Everyone has a different relationship with nature. For some of us it’s a passion, for others, it’s a passing interest. By taking a moment to stop and enjoy the view of nature from the bridge on June 11th, my hope is that we will all be reminded of the beauty and importance of this green space to our cities and our lives. Because if it isn’t protected, it will disappear. Together we can build awareness in a fun, unique and welcoming way, and the funds raised will help to secure and protect the beauty of this natural environment for generations to come,” Patrick Bermingham, Project Champion.

  • Know of any fun family events coming up that our Montessori community would enjoy? Let us know.

The end is near, at least for this school year, but your wonderful children are still giving it the full Montessori.
