Information and Reminders

  • Grandparents’ Day

Grandparents’ Day is on Friday, May 31st. This day is always a bit chaotic, but more fun than every other day. Grandparents of Casa and Lower Elementary children are welcome to visit their grandchildren in their Montessori environments during the morning work cycle.

A Request Please: if children will be leaving with grandparents, please schedule their departure from DVMS to coincide with their lunch or recess break (11:30), and let the kids (and grandparents) know what the plan is; this is the best way for everyone to avoid tears.

The Upper Elementary and Toddler Communities do not participate in Grandparents’ Day:  participation is traditionally low in the Upper rooms (but grandparents are welcome to come watch them play tennis in the park), and there are too many tears when grandparents leave the Toddlers, so they’re having an end-of-day Garden Party.

As you may know, Hamilton continues to be an identified risk area for ticks and Lyme disease. At DVMS, we have taken precautions regarding ticks, ensuring all long grass is cut.  Children are asked to buddy up and check each other after play time each day.  It is good protocol to check your children before bed.

Elementary Snack Sale:

  • Lower Elementary South will have a snack sale on Thursday May 9th and Lower Elementary North will have a Snack sale on Thursday May 16th during lunch.

Why Do We Have So Many Bake Sales:

  • Montessori children are encouraged to follow their interests and by nature children are charitable and seek fairness and justice, especially during the elementary years. We realize that bake sales can cause some controversy. We encourage the children when they come to us with the idea of a bake sale because of the many lessons they offer. Organizing, executing and reflecting on running a business, mathematics, money management and all the lessons that happen in the kitchen while they prepare their goods.  These are important life lessons.  While there may other things that the children could sell to raise money for charities, the bake sale is by far the most exciting and an activity that the children are most invested in. Ultimately for the children purchasing the treats, this is an opportunity to teach the importance of moderation.  Eat wholesome food, but indulge once in a while with a reasonable portion of a delicious treat.  Because DVMS has policies regarding the day to day lunch items that we would rather not see, the bake sale once a month allows for us to indulge just that little bit.  Over the course of the years, there will be many student-organized and run bake sales, in-school sports tournaments, and other ventures. We ask for your patience and cooperation as they learn how to organize, communicate, and run these events.

Grandparents’ Day Coming Up:

  • A bit of notice that Grandparents’ Day is coming up on Friday, May 31. This day is always a bit chaotic, but more fun than every other day. Grandparents of Casa and Lower Elementary children are welcome to visit their grandchildren in their Montessori environments during the morning work cycle. A Request Please: if children will be leaving with grandparents, please schedule their departure from DVMS to coincide with their lunch or recess break, and let the kids (and grandparents) know what the plan is; this is the best way for everyone to avoid tears.
  • The Upper Elementary and Toddler Communities do not participate in Grandparents’ Day:  participation is traditionally low in the Upper rooms (but grandparents are welcome to come watch them play tennis in the park), and there are too many tears when grandparents leave the Toddlers.  Toddlers will be hosting their tea in the afternoon.

Sign-up for Grandparents’ Day will be available next week.

Extra-long Weekend Notice:

  • The Victoria Day long weekend is coming up. DVMS is closed on Friday, May 17, for a PD Day,  and on Monday, May 21, for the Victoria Day holiday.

Mary left on Thursday (April 18th)and will return at the end of the month.  We are fortunate that during Mary’s absence, Shannon Chambers (mother of Carson and a trained Montessori 3-6 teacher) will be filling in to assist the bambini children alongside Lisa S.Q.  Shannon has supplied in the Bambini classroom before as well as all of our Casa and Toddler rooms.  The children will be happy to have another familiar friend caring for them while Mary is away.   Mary is grateful for the support and encouragement she has received from the entire school community and will be eager to tell you about her experiences when she returns.

Show Me Day

  • Show Me Day takes place Wednesday, March 6, from 9:00-11:00, for Casa and Lower Elementary children and their parents. Show Me Day is a chance for you to spend part of a morning with your children in their Montessori environments. During your 20-minute visit, they will show you some of their favourite Montessori jobs and/or some of their favourite pieces of work that they have completed or are working on. This is always a very exciting day for the children as they have the opportunity to invite you into their Montessori worlds.  We are requesting that children remain at school after your visit.  Having some children leave and others stay part way through the day is disruptive to the children’s work cycle.  Thank you for understanding.
  • Parents of Upper Elementary students, your children will be presenting speeches later on in the term.Click on the links below to sign up for your time:Casa North

Elementary Activities

  • There are no Elementary Activities planned for March because of the PD day for conferences and a two week March Break.  We are looking forward to Track and Field for the Upper Elementary students and Dance for the Lower Elementary students when we return from March Break.

                  Elementary Talent Show

  • Some Upper Elementary students are hosting a talent show in the school gym on March 7th at 10:00 am-11:30 am. Upper and Lower Elementary parents are welcome to come and watch the students performing their talents. If you would like to donate we will be collecting donations for next years Montessori Model United Nations Conference.

Thanks, and we hope to see you there!

Ella Boylan, Chloe Speziale, Alexia Gamble, Yazmeen Deschenes, and Ruby Hudecki

Information and Reminders

  • Parking Reminders:  Our parking lot poses challenges on the best of days.  With the piles of snow that have been plowed, it is even more precarious.  We are asking that ONLY Toddler and Casa Parents use the lot to drop off.  If you have an Elementary child, we are asking you to drop them off at the bottom of the driveway and let them walk up.  Please also note that parking along the walkway fence is not permitted as it is a fire route and also makes it impossible for cars to maneuver in the lot. Thank you for understanding.

  • DVMS Parent Looking for care: After school care needed for a 2-year-old boy in the toddler program.  Looking for either 2 or 3 days a week (your choice of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday, doesn’t even have to be the same days each week!) from when school’s out at 3:30pm until 5:15pm, $35 each day. Ideally looking for someone close to the school.  If in walking distance I can provide a stroller, or if by car, I can provide a car seat.I’m sending this message out in the hopes that a fellow Montessori parent has the patience (strength? endurance?) to add another little one to their after-school activities for less than two hours a shot.

Thanks

Tara Crugnale (Tristan Miu’s mom).
